(Emily's bedroom at night. Emily is sitting at her laptop, wearing headphones, playing a game with Olive online. Dee is on her bed reading a book.)

Olive:

Emily: Coming back. Ok got it. Yeah I'm so jealous of arts students, they seem to have SO much time. And Dee... they go to all sorts of lectures whenever.
Olive:

Emily: Well yeah
BUT,
(Emily's room when it's light; Emily and Dee are sitting on her bed, both plaiting Emily's hair.)
Dee:
Emily - I've come to the realisation, over the past few weeks, that, um, I don't like when you call me "they".
Emily: Oh, no, I'm sorry!
Dee: Don't be! I'm surprised, myself.
Emily: Wait so - does this mean you are a man...?
Dee: Nah I don't think it's anything like that. I've been trying to figure it out.

Alt text: the thing about 3rd person pronouns is sometimes it takes a little while to hear someone talking ABOUT you in FRONT of you (especially if very few people know you exist in the first place)
