(Emily and Dee lounging on the floor reading the Book Thief together.)
Dee: What's so funny about my scythe?
Emily: What?
Dee: Bottom of the page. "By the way - I like this human idea of the grim reaper. I like the scythe. It amuses me."
Emily: Well, it is a random farm tool.
Dee: It's metaphorical!
Emily: So? He's got different rules, and anything's funny when it's wrong. Like the idea of riding in a kangaroo pouch.
Dee: Oh, yeah, true. People do believe some silly things.
Emily: Yeah, you said yourself about the chess thing.
Dee: Oh yes - I laugh at those people. And also the ones who try to kill me.
Emily: ... Um, OK.
IT WAS SOMETHING TO LAUGH ABOUT. AND CRY ABOUT.
(Emily reading in bed, at the end of the book, crying.)
Dee (appearing): Did you just finish 'The Book Thief'?
Emily: Yes! Did you?
Dee: Yes...
(Emily holds her arms out for a hug. Dee comes and sits on her bed and hugs her.)
Dee: I wish I could cry...
